Elisabeth El Refaie

Dr Elisabeth El Refaie is a Senior Lecturer in Language and Communication at Cardiff University. She  grew up in Vienna, where she studied Journalism while also working part-time for several newspapers and news agencies. After graduating she moved to the UK, where she qualified to teach and then did a PhD on metaphors in newspaper discourses about asylum seekers at Bradford University.

She is currently working with South African HIV/AIDS charity Whizzkids United on a project that organises comics drawing workshops for local teenagers as a way to encourage them to explore and express their own experiences of the disease, and create educational messages relevant to other young people in their community (http://www.whizzkidsunited.org/comics).

In 2012 she published her book 'Autobiographical Comics: Life Writing in Pictures' with Mississippi University press, which was shortlisted for the academic books category of the Will Eisner Award.
